On December 2013 I directed an introductory workshop on Type Design at the UFMG Cultural Center. The participants created a typeface based on their handwriting. By choosing a specific tool, they drew the alphabet’s letters and the other symbols that make part of a font. The focus was set on the gesture, and on how typography, in spite of its domesticating aspect, offers unique possibilities of expression – hence the workshop’s title, which can be translated as “Taming the Untamable”. The resulting script was digitally manipulated and eventually exported as a font.
Em dezembro de 2013 eu ministrei uma oficina de iniciação em Design de Tipos no Centro Cultural UFMG. Os participantes criaram um tipo a partir da escrita manual. Escolhendo uma ferramenta, desenharam as letras do alfabeto e os demais signos que compõem uma fonte. O foco recaiu no o gesto, e em como a tipografia – apesar de ser um elemento domesticador do alfabeto – oferece possibilidades únicas de expressão. A escrita resultante foi digitalizada e viabilizada na forma de fonte.
En décembre 2013 j’ai dirigé un workshop d’introduction au Dessin de Caractères au Centre Culturel de l’UFMG. Les participants ont créé une police en partant de leur écriture manuelle. En choisissant un outil, ils ont dessiné les lettres de l’alphabet et les autres signes qui font partie d’une fonte. L’attention s’est penchée sur le geste, et sur comment la typographie, bien qu’en étant un élément dompteur de l’alphabet, offre des possibilités uniques d’expression – d’ou le titre du workshop, dont la traduction est “En domptant l’indomptable”. L’écriture résultante a été numérisée et exportée en tant que fonte.
