On January 2017 I directed the third edition of this workshop on Type Design, which took place this time at the École de Communication Visuelle (ECV), in Bordeaux, France. The participants, divided in two classes of 30 students and working mainly in pairs, created a typeface based on their handwriting and drawings. By choosing a specific tool, they drew the alphabet’s letters and the other symbols that make part of a font. The focus was set on the gesture, and on how typography, in spite of its domesticating aspect, offers unique possibilities of expression – hence the workshop’s title, which can be translated as “Taming the Untameable”. By the end of the cycle, the resulting script was digitally edited and eventually exported as a font, and the participants created a poster/specimen presenting their typefaces. Thirty typefaces were created.

Em janeiro de 2017 eu ministrei a terceira edição de Domesticando o Indomesticável, oficina de Design de Tipos, realizada dessa vez na École de Communication Visuelle (ECV), em Bordeaux, França. Divididos em duas turmas de 30 estudantes e trabalhando prioritariamente em dupla, os participantes criaram um tipo a partir da escrita e de desenhos manuais. Escolhendo uma ferramenta, desenharam as letras do alfabeto e os demais signos que compõem uma fonte. O foco recaiu no gesto, e em como a tipografia – apesar de ser um elemento domesticador do alfabeto – oferece possibilidades únicas de expressão. No fim do ciclo, a escrita resultante foi digitalizada e viabilizada na forma de fonte e os participantes criaram cartazes/espécimes apresentando seus tipos. Trinta fontes foram criadas.

En janvier 2017 j’ai dirigé la troisième édition de Domptant l’Indomptable, masterclass de Dessin de Caractères, qui a eu lieu cette fois à l’ECV Bordeaux. Les participants, divisés en deux classes de 30 étudiants et travaillant majoritairement en binôme, ont créé une police en partant de leur écriture et leurs dessins manuels. En choisissant un outil, ils ont dessiné les lettres de l’alphabet et les autres signes qui font partie d’une fonte. L’attention s’est penchée sur le geste, et sur comment la typographie, bien qu’elle soit un élément dompteur de l’alphabet, peut-elle aussi offrir des possibilités uniques d’expression. À la fin du cycle l’écriture résultante a été numérisée, éditée et exportée en tant que fonte et les participants ont créé des affiches/spécimens présentant leur création. Trente polices de caractères ont été créés.
